The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Co-operative Group Housing Societies opposed the property tax levied on flat owners here on Saturday.

The committee comprises about 100 societies. Col SK Aggarwal, JAC general secretary said, "As per Para 2A of property tax notification, house owners with independent plot size upto 300 sq yards are required to pay property tax at Rs 0.75 per sq yard per year in Panchkula, while flat owners with carpet area upto 2000 sq feet are required to pay it at `0.75 per sq feet per year."

"Thus, flat owners will be paying 900% property tax more than the independent plot house owners. This marked differentiation is most illogical and irrational besides being illegal and discriminatory. It gives a big blow to the middle class and pensioners," he said, adding that "Independent plot house basement is not taxable whereas 40% rebate is given for first floor and 50% rebate for second floor."
The committee has submitted a memorandum to principal secretary urban local bodies, Raghvendra Rao, in this regard.

They also raised another point in the memorandum, "At Panchkula, command and control of sectors has not been handed over by Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to municipal corporation (MC) and the latter is not providing any services to flat owners. Even garbage collection and disposal is done by societies themselves. The property tax can be levied only once sectors are handed over to Panchkula MC for maintenance and make them accountable," read the memo.
