Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar on Thursday confronted deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on the issue of power.

“Where has the power gone?” Jakhar asked Sukhbir, reminding him of the tall claims about Punjab being a power-surplus state.

In a press statement, the CLP leader said he had been receiving complaints from different sections of society about power cuts. He said the Congress had raised the issue of power crisis in the state assembly on July 16. “The next day, you had promised to the elected members of the legislative assembly that the state government would improve the power condition in 15 days,” he said.

In keeping with your promise on the floor of the House, Jakhar said the 24-hour power supply was to begin from August 1.

The CLP leader said people had been facing the heat of the summer, while the deputy chief minister was giving “fake assurances”. He said the condition of the power supply was not good even in the assembly segment Sukhbir represented.

“Just five-hour power supply is available in almost all districts of the state,” Jakhar claimed.

“The Congress hopes you will maintain the dignity of your promises and address the problems of the common man. You cannot give false excuses as your party is in power in the state and is a coalition partner of the BJP at the Centre,” Jakhar said.
