The resignation submitted by the Punjab Congress Legislature Party leader, Sunil Kumar Jakhar, was rejected by All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi, his aides claimed here on Sunday.

Three-time sitting MLA from Abohar, Jakhar contested the Ferozepur Lok Sabha seat but lost to Shiromani Akali Dal's Sher Singh Ghubaya. "After the poll results, Jakhar met Sonia Gandhi and, taking moral responsibility, he offered a written resignation to the AICC president. But she asked him to continue as CLP leader," said Sanjeev Trikha, his spokesman. Jakhar is now on a tour across Ferozepur to thank his supporters.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa, who lost from Gurdaspur, has also ofefred to resign from his post, but the party's national general secretary Shakeel Ahmad, incharge of the state, has told HT that his removal was "not at all" being considered.
