Leader of Opposition in Punjab assembly Sunil Kumar Jakhar asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to take stern action against drug peddling in the state and spare no one including "politicians"."Cosmetic administrative actions will yield no everlasting solution. To do justice, the state must rise to the occasion and inflict historic punishment by confiscating and liquidating assets created out of drug money sparing no one irrespective of his social and political status," Jakhar said.Referring to yesterday's crackdown on drugs in Daulewala village of Moga, the Congress leader said it would yield nothing as it was "merely a smokescreen to shield the big sharks of the drug business".Stating that the village had been "hogging limelight for being a drug citadel", he asked why the state police did not take any action then, and contended that this showed the police-politician nexus in drug peddling.
Jakhar said yesterday's raids were insufficient as the large drug menace caused unemployment and also resulted in farmer suicides."Drug abuse has also added to rural unemployment and indebtedness which has caused many farmer suicides," he said.Jakhar urged the government to bring about a legislation to confiscate and liquidate properties created out of drug money, and the money thus raised should be exclusively spent on the rehabilitation of drug affected families, he said.
