The UT vigilance wing arrested a junior engineer (JE) of the electricity department while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 here on Tuesday.

The accused has been identified as Jitender Prasad. He was nabbed red- handed on complaint of Manimajra-based shopkeeper Gulshan Kumar, who had accused him of demanding an illegal gratification of Rs 5,000. The accused has been booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to allegations, the accused had demanded Rs 50,000 from Gulshan for helping him out in a case of tampering with the electricity meter.

Gulshan was under the scanner of the electricity department for allegedly tampering with the meter. After Gulshan expressed his inability to pay Rs 50,000, Jatinder agreed on Rs 20,000. The accused had taken the first instalment of Rs 5,000 on May 20.

After receiving and verifying the complaint, a special team conducted a raid at Manimajra and arrested the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 5,000. Search was conducted at his residential premises.

The accused will be produced in the court on Wednesday.
