The police have registered a case against unidentified persons after a Sector-40 resident lodged a complaint alleging he had found jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh missing from his locker at the Sector 35 branch of Canara Bank, on Tuesday.
The police said Vimal Kumar Nohria, in his complaint, claimed that a bag containing the jewellery had been stolen from his locker at the state-owned bank and that he discovered the theft when he was asked by a bank official to check his locker.
“I got a phone call from the bank branch manager on August 9, asking me to visit the branch as he wanted to discuss some important matter. When I arrived there along with my wife, who is the joint locker holder, the manager told me a member of the bank staff had broken open his locker by mistake on July 30 but its contents had been kept safe. When I went through the packet I found the jewellery missing,” Nohria told the police. He claimed the lock was broken on July 30 but the bank informed him about the matter after 10 days. “There’s no CCTV camera in the locker room,”he added. Nohria alleged there was negligence on part of the bank as no inventory was prepared and no details of witnesses were provided.
When contacted, Balbir Singh, the bank branch manager, claimed, “I’m not aware of the matter. I don’t think there has been any such incident.”
Police registered a case of theft and criminal breach of trust under sections 380 and 406 of the IPC, respectively against unidentified suspects.
