An all-women gram sabha was held at Bibipur village of Jind district on Monday to create awareness on the issue of female foeticide and the importance of the girl child in society. It was an unprecedented event in the country.

The Union panchayati raj ministry organised the gram sabha as it wanted to include women in the campaign of awareness about female foeticide at the grassroot level.

Earlier, on May 29, an additional secretary and members of Union panchayati raj ministry reached the village and asked the women residents of the village to organise the gram sabha on the issue.

According to sarpanch Sunil Kumar, more than 200 women residents gathered and took many decisions after consulting with each other.

A committee will soon be formed to keep check on the pregnant women of villages and a proper record of pregnant women would be maintained for curbing the menace of female foeticide in the village, he added.
