Representatives of various unions of working journalists have unanimously demanded a high-level probe against the cane-charge on journalists by the policemen at Kurukshetra on August 6.

The journalists were beaten up while they were covering the clashes between the supporters of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and police at Kurukshetra.

In a memorandum submitted to the deputy commissioner, which is addressed to the governor, journalists lamented the role of administrative and police officials in whose presence they were targeted.

Twelve journalists had sustained injuries in the police action.

President of Karnal unit of Haryana Patrakar Sangh, Devender Gandhi said the journalists were specifically targeted by the police while they were discharging their duties and there was no provocation by the scribes.

The delegation also provided photographic evidence to support their allegations of police excesses.
