Delivering the Mehr Chand Mahajan memorial lecture at PU law convocation on Saturday, Justice Tirath Singh Thakur said, "We talk of judicial culture by the way justice is served … In the justice delivery system, a judge occupies central position. His conduct, approach and performance matter. Lawyers also play a supplementary role. But the judge's objectivity and fairness is under scrutiny."

He said that justice, equality and good conscience are the fundamentals of judicial culture and emphasised on the role and position of a judge in strengthening those ideals. The manner of speaking is crucial in the profession of law, he added. "In the art of advocacy, the manner of speech is paramount to the content and manner of presentation is equally important in this regard," he said.

He elaborated upon the role of a judge as a public and social spokesperson. "The moment a judge speaks outside the court, he exposes himself to criticism, but the judiciary needed to be demystified."

He recalled the contribution and services of Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan and referred to him as a visionary and 'Karamyogi'.

Former chief justice, high court of Sikkim, Justice Permod Kohli was also honoured on the occasion, who is incidentally the first gold medallist of PU in LLM.

The daughter of Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan and former principal of MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, Sneha Mahajan was also felicitated on the occasion. Earlier, PU vice-chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover welcomed Justice Thakur, the guests and the students. In his address, he emphasised upon the importance of law in contemporary times. He also asked the law faculty to make the convocation a regular feature of the calendar.
