Kandela khap head, supporters join Congress

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) received a jolt on Thursday when president of Kandela khap panchayat Tek Ram joined the Congress along with his supporters by quitting the INLD in the presence of chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at New Delhi.

Hooda welcomed Tek Ram on joining the Congress, a party release said, adding that the khap leader, who addressed the gathering said after serving the INLD for 22 years, he had given resignation from all posts and primary membership of the INLD.

Expressing his faith in the leadership of Hooda, he said he had given unconditional support to the Congress keeping in view the functioning of Hooda. He said khap panchayats of the state had been raising issues like the Swaminathan commission report, female foeticide and other social issues. He said Hooda would become the chief minister of Haryana for a third consecutive term also and would give further boost to the development works in the state, the release added.

Kandela khap has influence in 28 villages dominated by the Jat community of Redhu gotra in Jind district. It first time came to prominence in 2002-03 when it led a farmer’s agitation.

Khaps never vow their affiliation to any political party. But digressing from the path, Tek Ram, who was an active worker of the INLD, disassociated himself from the party after he was denied ticket for the upcoming assembly polls from Jind district.
