The Karnal Bar Association on Saturday suspended the three advocates who had been named by a special investigation team (SIT) of Haryana Police in an extortion racket. The lawyers were allegedly masterminding an extortion racket in the name of settling rape accusations.

The association president RK Chauhan told HT that lawyers Jaipal Singh, Deepak Mohan and Harish Arya had been suspended by the association and it has demanded a thorough probe in the case as some other people from different streams could also be involved in it.

The SIT had arrested lawyer, Jaipal Singh, on Thursday while four others, including two lawyers, were stated to be at large.

The racket was unearthed after KK Mishra, additional director general of police (ADGP), crime against women, ordered an inquiry in May.

Arya, who ran a voluntary organisation -- Fight for Justice Club of India, claimed to work for the oppressed class, particularly the victims of crime against women.

The racket got exposed when a 22-year-old woman from Ambala had charged one Ramesh Kumar with raping her, but had later retracted from her statement. However, later she appeared before ADGP Mishra and narrated how she was forced to withdraw her accusations by the lawyers in lieu of money, which was not paid to her.

The SIT held that it had enough evidence in the case.
