The police are providing security to a couple that was reunited with their baby after a Balmiki panchayat in Kathlahri village had annulled their marriage on August 29 because they belonged to the same gotra.
Though Superintendent of Police AS Chawla refused to disclose the whereabouts of the couple, sources said that Pawan, Kavita and their child were in a government rest house here under police protection since Sunday night.
Sources said the police brought Kavita from her relative’s house in Chandigarh to look after the baby, who was recovered from a nearby locality. The police have kept the foster parents’ identity under wraps.
Chawla said the police were trying to verify if the family adopted the infant in good faith or if it was part of a larger conspiracy after the panchayat ordered the child be taken away from the couple. The police have booked six members of the panchayat who forced the couple to declare each other brother and sister.
The SP said action would be taken after each individual’s role in the incident was established. He denied allegations that the police were going slow in the case due to political pressure.
