The local police have booked management of a private nursing home for illegally running a pregnancy termination centre at Rama Nagar locality in Karnal.
The action was taken after a team of the district health department raided the premises of Khullar Maternity and Nursing Home late Wednesday night and held the hospital staff red-handed performing abortion on two women.
The chief medical officer Dr Shiv Kumar told HT that the nursing staff was not authorised to conduct medical termination of pregnancy (MTP). He said that nursing home and equipments used in the MTP were seized.
"The doctor running the centre, Kamlesh claims to hold a degree in ayurvedic medicine and she admitted performing the illegal MTP for the last few years," he said. CMO clarified that the two cases detected last night were not of female foeticide.
Both the women were under three months pregnant so it could not be considered female faeticide. "Before three months one cannot determine the gender of the foetus. We have checked the hospital records and found records pertaining to 157 illegal MTPs but there is no evidence to relate these cases to female foeticide," said the CMO.
