A day after a couple was arrested with 500-gm heroin and Rs 4 lakh, it has come to light that the two allegedly had a well-knit network for supplying the drug in the districts of Nawanshahr, Khanna, Fatehgarh Sahib and SAS Nagar.
On Tuesday, the accused were produced in a Kharar court, from where Dalip was remanded in three-day police custody, while Jaswinder was sent in judicial custody after the court took leniency of her being a mother of an eight-month-old child.
On Monday, the CIA staff of SAS Nagar police had arrested Dalip Singh, 29, and his wife Jaswinder Kaur, 35, at Balongi, while they were allegedly coming to SAS Nagar in a bus to deliver the heroin consignment.
During interrogation, it was found that the couple allegedly had links with peddlers in the four Punjab districts for supplying heroin to college students. They were operating for two years and used to get the drug from border areas of Amritsar and Tarn Taran, police said.
CIA incharge Gurcharan Singh said the couple revealed that they first took to the drug trade two years ago, when they were lodged in the district prison of Jalandhar for the alleged murder of Jaswinder Kaur's husband. Jaswinder was the wife of Dalip's brother. But after the two had fallen in love, they allegedly murdered her husband in 2003.
They were released on bail in 2011, following which they allegedly started peddling heroin and started a taxi service. The police now hope to unearth more information regarding the case. "We are trying to find out about their network and hopefully some big names will crop up," the CIA incharge said.
The couple was arrested following information provided by three drug peddlers, nabbed for allegedly carrying 30-gram heroin on Saturday. The three - Harjeet Singh, 29, a resident of Delhi; Tejinder Singh, 24, of Balachaur; and Inderpal Singh, 27 - had informed the police about the couple, following which the police laid a checkpoint at Balongi and arrested the two. Jaswinder and Dalip hail from Alampur village in Jalandhar district and were living in Khanna at present.
