The police claim to have rescued four-year-old Ajay Kumar, who was allegedly kidnapped by his neighbour in Kishangarh on Sunday.
The police claimed that the accused, Suresh Kumar, was arrested at Ambala railway station, when he was planning to flee to his native place in Uttar Pradesh.
They said though Suresh, a painter, was yet to reveal why he kidnapped the child, it was learnt that he wanted to extort money from Ajay’s family, as he was jobless for the past several months.
Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) (east) Parvinder Singh said Ajay was playing outside his house in Kishangarh when Suresh kidnapped him on Sunday. Children playing with Ajay saw Suresh taking him away, he added.
Therefore, police launched a manhunt to trace Suresh, who hailed from Bareilly district in UP. “Teams were sent to both the bus stands in Chandigarh and Ambala railway station, with the apprehension that Suresh would take a train to Bareilly,” the ASP added.
Finally, on the intervening night of January 26 and 27, Suresh was nabbed from the Ambala railway station and rescued Ajay. The ASP said the fact that other children identified Suresh helped them trace him.
He added that Suresh kept changing his locus to avoid arrest. Besides, Ajay was comfortable with him as he knew him as a neighbour.
No ransom call made by the accused.
The police said the police had detained all persons with whom Suresh had been in touch over phone. They claimed that the accused had confessed to have not made a ransom call after he realised that police for on the lookout for him.
