Two days after announcement, the Lok Sabha candidature of Bollywood actress Kirron Kher remains a source of discontent in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chandigarh.
For the Chandigarh seat, the BJP picked Kirron over local party president Sanjay Tandon, senior leader Satya Pal Jain, and veteran Harmohan Dhawan. Around noon, Kirron arrived here to a grand reception at the airport, where Tandon was in the welcome party; but as her cavalcade moved to the party office in Sector 33, it was shown black flags on the way at The Tribune roundabout, Sector 47, and Colony Number 4.
At the local BJP office, Kamlam, where she reached with her actor husband, Anupam Kher, and BJP affairs in-charge for Chandigarh Aarti Mehra, she found half the gathering raising slogans against her. A section pelted Anupam’s car with stones and eggs, forcing him to leave the venue.
Denied ticket, Jain and Tandon were still out there to welcome Kirron but Dhawan was absent. Interrupting her interaction with workers, a section led by Hallomajra sarpanch JD Gupta demanded that the ticket to “the outsider” be taken back. The chaos went on for an hour.
BJP affairs in-charge for Chandigarh Aarti Mehra tried to get the workers to accept the official candidate.
Reacting to the objection that Kirron was based in Mumbai, Mehra said that after winning, the actress would show everyone how a people’s representative should work.
