Unseeded Krishan Hooda rallied from first-set loss to defeat second seed Gaurav Kurva in the boys’ under-12 singles final of the Shivalik Public School AITA Super Series that concluded at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) complex, Sector 10, on Friday.
In the first set, Hooda, who is enrolled under CLTA’s rural tennis programme called CHART, showed a lot of resilience against his much experienced opponent, bouncing back to make it 4-4 after Kurva went 4-1 up. The latter, however, kept his cool to win the next two games, and the set, 6-4.
Unfazed by the loss, Hooda made a spectacular comeback in the second set and played brilliantly for a 6-1 win.
In the decider, the two players got engaged in an intense battle of superiority, breaking each other’s serves till 3-3.
Thereafter, Hooda produced some good variations in his game to claim the next three games, and also won the match.
This was Hooda’s maiden singles title in an AITA (All India Tennis Association) tournament since he started with the sport in 2012.
Meanwhile, the corresponding under-16 final also saw a big upset, with eighth seeded CHART trainee Digvijay Pratap Singh defeating fifth seeded Aditya Vashisht in straight sets.
In the opening set, Digvijay, after being broken in the very first game, played ruthlessly against his higher-ranked opponent to register a 6-1 win.
In the second set, Digvijay took an early break and was leading 5-4 at one stage. However, Vashisht fought back to break Digvijay in the tenth game to make it 5-5 all. But Digvijay did well to hold his nerves and won the next two games, and the match, 6-1, 7-5.
Meanwhile, it was double delight for Sarah Dev as she won the under-12 as well as the under-16 singles titles in the girls’ event.
In the U-12 final, top seed Dev blanked third seed Vanshika Chaudhary 6-0, 6-0. In the under-16 final, Dev, given third seed for the section, upset top seed CLTA trainee Prinkle Singh 6-2, 6-3.
