A 30-year-old migrant labourer from Jharkhand was stoned to death over a paltry sum of Rs 100 on Monday. The police arrested his distant relative, who is working as a labourer with the same company.

The deceased has been identified as Baij Nath (30), who was working on the project of L&T company here, and the accused as Dev Nath (35).

Police said labour contractor Dalip Parshad reported on Monday morning that one of his labourers Baij Nath was missing. His body was later found at a village near Sohana in SAS Nagar.

The police revealed that the accused and the deceased had a fight last night, following which the accused repeatedly hit the accused on his head with a stone, causing his death. A case under section 302 (murder) of IPC was registered at Sohana police station.

In his statement to the police, accused Dev Nath said he gave Rs 100 to Baij Nath to get ration on Sunday night. He said he kept waiting for Baij Nath to return and when he went looking for him after about three hours, he found him drinking. He further said that when he asked him for money to buy food, the deceased said he had spent it on liquor. This enraged Dev and he picked a stone lying nearby and hit Baij Nath repeatedly on his head, resulting in his death.
