The emission of large amount of carbon in environment in Kullu district has been worrying the environmentalists these days.

Talking to Hindustan Times, environmentalist of GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environmental and Development Himachal unit, Mohal Kullu, JC Kuniyal said that 4 microgram of black carbon found in the environment at Mohal Kullu will affect the glaciers in Kullu district in the Rohtang Pass and Parvati Valley in the district, if authority fails to take effective steps to overcome the situation.

According to Kuniyal, the emission of black carbon in environment will affect the glaciers resulting in swift depletion of glaciers and increase in temperature. He said, the existence of black carbon in Kullu district has raised alarm bells.

He termed different reasons like de-forestation, establishment of hydel projects, dense population and increase in vehicles, resulting in harmful emission of gases leading to degradation of environment.

According to the latest study at the GB Pant institute, large quantity of aerosol optical depth (AOD) was found at Mohal, Kothi towards the Rohtang Pass side, and near Beas Kund glacier.

Increase of AOD in environment may cause serious consequences over glaciers, which could raise temperature resulting in swift melting of snow in glaciers.

To curb this degradation, everybody should take up his responsibility to plant more trees in district, said Kuniyal.
