A city-based lawyer has appealed the UT administration to initiate action against those online e-commerce websites that are into the business of selling oral contraceptive pills and sleeping pills.
In a representation to UT adviser Vijay Kumar Dev, advocate Ajay Jagga said that some top e-commerce websites were selling melatonin and oral contraceptive pills, thus violating the law.
He said it was a shock that these medicines were being sold on the internet, which is in clear violation of the laws related to sale of drugs, especially melatonin - meant for helping and regulating sleep, and also helps with feelings of anxiety - and oral contraceptive pills, which contains estrogen and progestin, used to prevent conception.
"The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, was enacted to protect people and animals from the side effects of the un-prescribed drugs by ensuring that without a licence, no one should be able to sell the drugs,"he added.
Jagga has asked for an inquiry by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and police including, cybercrime cell, followed by registration of a criminal complaint by the FDA against all these websites.
