Lax police investigation into the mysterious death of a Sunita, a resident of Sector 15, led to the acquittal of her husband and father-in-law, facing charges of abetment to suicide.
District and sessions judge SK Aggarwal on Tuesday acquitted Nand Kishore (80) and his son Pawan (37) booked for abetment to suicide after the prosecution failed to prove the allegations.
Pawan was in custody, while Nand Kishore was never arrested as the court had granted him anticipatory bail.
Police investigation failed to establish whether Sunita's death was a suicide or accident, thus paving way for acquittal.
The duo was booked on March 26, 2013, on the allegations of abetment to suicide made by Sunita's brother Rajesh Kumar accusing them of harassing his sister for dowry.
According to the police, Sunita had sustained injuries after falling from the shop-cum-flat in Sector 15 on March 25.
In the complaint to the police, Kumar had claimed that his sister had married Pawan in March 2000 and the family had incurred Rs 15-lakh expenditure on the wedding.
He alleged that Pawan and his father used to harass his sister for dowry. Defence counsel Gagan Aggarwal said, "There was no demand for dowry in the past 13 years. None of the allegations levelled were proved."
