Liquor vend brawl: 2 convicted for assault

Additional district and sessions judge, Shalini S Nagpal, on Friday convicted two students for assaulting a youth at a liquor vend in Sector 46 in January 2010.

The court convicted Sobhit Kumar alias Rahul, 25, a Sector 31 resident, who was pursuing hotel management in Dera Bassi, and Gurdeep Singh alias Lovely, 25, a Sector 37 resident. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on August 25.

The court, however, acquitted seven students, including Dinesh Kumar, 29, a Sector 46 resident, Karan Dhappa, 26, hailing from Kullu, Rishab, 25, a Sector 56 resident, Anurag Verma, 24, a Sector 47 resident, Manmeet Singh, 23, a SAS Nagar resident, Devvart Bisht, 26, a Sector 47 resident, Vishal, 24, a Sector 46 resident and Rajinder Kumar alias Sonu, Sector 47 resident, as the prosecution failed to prove allegations against them.

The UT police had booked nine students on the complaint of Sanjeev Kumar, who was injured in the brawl on January 23, 2010. In his complaint, Sanjeev had said that he was sitting in the ahata (liquor vend) when the accused asked him for a drink but when he refused the accused searched him and later assaulted him.
