Fifty two-year-old Mangat Ram, who was robbed of Rs 4 lakh outside a medical store in Pinjore on Monday, had withdrawn the money from his provident fund for his daughter’s wedding on April 27.

Talking to HT, Ram, a moulder in Hindustan Machine Tools Limited foundry, said the money was his life’s earning. “I had withdrawn the money to make payment to the jeweller and sweets vendor for my daughter’s wedding,” said a remorseful Ram, the family’s breadwinner.

A heart patient, the victim, now left with no option, will borrow money from his friends and relatives

He said he had not even informed his family members that he was going to the bank to withdraw the money. When he informed his wife, a diabetes and heart patient, she fell unconscious and has been bed-ridden since.

The victim has another married daughter, and a BCom passout son, who he wishes to enrol for MBA.

PCR slow to respond

Vikram Kumar, a worker at the medical store where the robbery happened, alleged that store owner Sushil Kumar called the police control room (PCR) more than thrice, but no one answered.

Therefore, the victim was forced to rush back to the bank, where he was finally able to get in touch with the police. Vikram further alleged that normally a PCR van was deployed near the bank, but it was missing on Monday morning.
