Lt Col booked for stalking woman

The local police here booked a retired Lieutenant Colonel for stalking a woman in sector 4 Mansa Devi Complex (MDC) on Sunday.


As per the police, the woman who is around 55-year-old made the complaint that Lt Col LS Bedi (retd), had been following her for some days which disturbed her mental peace. Bedi is also around 55-60 year-old.

Both are residents of Army flats in sector 4 MDC and are neighbourers. “Both know each other and were earlier office bearers in the society of flats,” said ASI Bhupinder Singh of Mansa Devi police station.

“Right now, no arrest has been made. We are investigating the case,” said Singh.

What is section 354 D

The Section 354 D, a newly added section in the Indian Penal Code, which is invoked in case of stalking a woman and contacting her or making an attempt to contact to foster personal interaction repeatedly, despite her clear indication of disinterest.

There is a provision of imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than one year but which may extend to three years, and shall also be liable to fine. It can also be invoked for watching or spying in a manner that results in a fear of violence or serious alarm or distress in the mind or interferes with the mental peace of such person.

The section 354 D cannot be invoked if stalking is committed by a policeman for prevention and detection of crime.
