The day after a 21-year hotel employee was gangraped here, the police on Monday arrested one of the three accused.

The arrested accused has been identified as 21-year-old Badal, a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar here. The other two accused are Monu, 20, and Sunny, 25. Monu is a resident of Safidon town in Jind district of Haryana, while Sunny is a resident of Ambala.

Meanwhile, according to unconfirmed reports, the other two accused have also been arrested from different locations in the city, but the police did not confirm their arrest.

The police said the three were habitual offenders; the two others would visit Badal in Ludhiana and they would execute incidents of snatching and loot. After committing the crime they would hide at Badal's rented accommodation. After the gangrape also, the three took shelter there. The three had been released on bail around 15 days ago in a case of snatching and loot.

Following the incident, the police beefed up security in the city and put up nakas at various points. At one such naka on Dhandran Road on Monday evening, the police asked a Maruti 800 to stop. Instead of stopping, the driver sped off. The police chased the car occupied by the three accused and impounded it near GK Vihar as they had abandoned it there due to a traffic jam.

The accused alighted from the car and ran in different directions. As the police chased them, Badal ran into the nearby fields, where people nabbed him and handed him over to the police. The police said that as Badal was trying to escape he fractured one of his legs. The other two accused managed to flee. The police cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to nab them.

Meanwhile, director general of police Sumedh Singh Saini and additional director general of police (intelligence) Hardeep Singh Dhillon are camping in the city to monitor the situation. Saini, who met senior officials of the police commissionerate, is likely to hold a press conference on Tuesday.

In her statement to the police, the victim said two of the accused called each other by the names Monu and Vicky, while the third who was driving the car advised them against it.

The three had kidnapped the woman from the Rajguru Nagar area on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday and committed the crime. They later dumped her at Rajguru Nagar before fleeing the place.
