Mahilpur Football Academy stunned Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the opening encounter of 12th Administrator’s Challenge Cup football tournament at Sector 17 football stadium on Monday.
Mahilpur opened the scoring in the 17th minute of play. Defender Mehtab Singh initiated the move from the deep in defense line giving a long pass to forward Sukhpreet who after controlling the ball managed to find Tejinder Singh free deep in Bagan’s defense.
The intial shot was blocked by Ba g an’s defender. But Mahilpur’s Jaskaran Singh was alert to the situation as he placed the ball in the net.
Stunned by this early reversal, Bagan started attacking and also managed to register some good moves but all of their attempts were foiled by the Mahilpur custodian Prabhdeep Singh. At half time, Mahilpur was leading 1-0.
Upon resumption both the teams started looking for goals but managed to fail at the final hurdle.
Then in the 63rd minute of play Jaskaran headed the ball into the net off a free kick taken by Sukhpreet Singh to round-off the winners tally.
Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by UT Finance and sport secretary Saravjit Singh.
