Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday directed all deputy commissioners to get the demarcation of Muslim burial grounds recorded in the revenue records with immediate effect.

In a communique issued to the deputy commissioners, the minister said they were getting complaints from many Muslim organisations regarding illegal encroachments on burial grounds and also illegal possession of such lands.

Majithia said that during Eid celebrations in Malerkotla a few months ago, this issue was raised before chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, who had promised to the Muslim brethren to look into the matter.

Majithia directed the officials to ensure removal of illegal encroachments as per law before initiating the demarcation process.

Majithia said the deputy commissioners were also asked to prepare estimates of funds required for construction of proper boundary walls around these sites in consultation with Punjab Waqf Board and Punjab Muslim Welfare and
Development Board.

Reiterating the state government's commitment to provide required lands for burial grounds, Majithia also promised to get such sites vacated from illegal possession.
