A local SAS Nagar court sentenced a man to ten years rigorous imprisonment (RI) on Thursday after holding him guilty of raping, beating, restraining and intimidating a 13-year-old girl in Balongi in January this year.

Shiva Verma, a resident of Adarsh Colony in Balongi, has been convicted under Sections 376(i) (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code by additional sessions judge Jaswinder Sheemar.

According to the FIR, Verma was booked on January 15 on the complaint of the victim's mother. The complainant said her daughter had gone to collect groceries from her father's shop in Balongi on the night of January 14 at around 8 pm. When she did not return, the mother went looking for her and found her crying in an abandoned house. The girl told her mother that Verma had forcibly taken her to the room and raped and thrashed her. Verma was then booked and later arrested.
