Additional district and sessions judge Paramjeet Singh on Friday awarded 9-year jail under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) to a 30-year-old Manimajra resident who was arrested with one kg of charas.
The convict has been identified as Karambir (30), a resident of Manimajra. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on him.
Dismissing a plea of leniency, the court held, “The convict was possessing one kg of charas. Such quantity cannot be kept for personal use and same must be possessed by him for the purpose of selling it to others. Drug menace is eroding lives of youth. A persons who is doing this cannot be shown leniency.”
Karambir was arrested by the UT police on July 16 last year at a naka in Manimajra. According to the police, Karambir was walking and threw a polythene bag that he was carrying on seeing the police. On searching the polythene bag, the police found one kg of charas in it. During initial investigations, Karambir had said the charas was sourced from Himachal Pradesh.
