The court of additional district and sessions judge Preeti Sahni on Friday convicted and awarded life term to a man for burning his wife to death.

The convict has been identified as Ramlakhan, 44, a resident of Vikas Nagar of Mauli Jagran. The court, however, acquitted his 19-year-old nephew, Asaram, booked on charges of helping the convict.
Dying declaration of the 28-year-old victim, Anita, who had succumbed to her injuries in a hospital, became the basis of the conviction.

In her dying declaration, Anita had stated that on February 6, 2012, at about 9 am, her husband, Ramlakhan, had set her ablaze after pouring kerosene on her.

As per the police, the couple had got married on May 22, 2011. It was Ramlakhan's second marriage as his first wife had died.

As per the police Ramlakhan, who worked in a private firm, was unhappy over the fact that his wife couldn't bear a child. Even on the day of incident, the couple had an argument over the issue and Ramlakhan lost his temper, doused Anita with kerosene and set her on fire. Neighbours rushed to help the victim and took her to a hospital.

Ramlakhan's defence was that the thumb impression on victim's statement to the police was different than the one on her dying declaration before a magistrate.
