Man gets lifer for setting wife ablaze

Additional district and sessions judge Rajinder Aggarwal on Friday awarded life imprisonment to a Dera Bassi resident for killing his wife by setting her ablaze after a fight.

Additional district and sessions judge Rajinder Aggarwal on Friday awarded life imprisonment to a Dera Bassi resident for killing his wife by setting her ablaze after a fight.


The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on convict Rajinder Kumar.

Kumar had killed his wife Sruti in October last year.

As per the prosecution, on October 17, 2011, Kumar had taken his wife Sruti, who sustained burn injuries, to GMCH at Sector 32 in Chandigarh.

The victim in her statement before the magistrate had claimed that she sustained burn injuries in an accident while cooking. Taking a U-turn, the victim later told her parents that she was set ablaze by her husband and the statement given before the magistrate that she had sustained injuries in an accident in kitchen was under pressure from her husband.

The victim's statement was recorded once again after her father moved an application.

The second statement was recorded by the magistrate on October 20 in which Sruti alleged that her husband used to quarrel with her and had even asked her to leave his house. She had told the magistrate the even on October 17, Kumar had a fight with her and after arguments poured kerosene on her and set her afire.

The victim succumbed to burn injuries on October 23.
