Additional district and sessions judge Anshu Shukla, presiding over a special court for crime against women, awarded life imprisonment to Vijender Paul, a resident of Sector 20, along with his lover, Renu Bains, a resident of a Hoshiarpur village, for the murder of his wife Pooja (32) in July 2012. They have also been fined Rs 70,000 each.

Vijender had strangulated his wife Pooja, put the body in front seat of a car, fastened the seat belt, and drove for over three hours, covering a distance of over 100 km, to dump the body in Hoshiarpur. Vijender and Renu poured petrol over the body and set it afire before throwing her in a ditch. Even though the case had made headlines for its brutal cold-bloodedness, the court said: “The case does not fall in the ‘rarest of rare category’ to be awarded capital punishment.”

“Vijender Paul broke the trust of his wife deliberately. He crossed all limits of humanity. The other accused Renu Bains also joined hands. Such persons deserve stringent punishment,” said the court.

The court also awarded the duo three-year jail for destruction of evidence and observed: “Both accused caused evidence to disappear.”
