A local court, on Tuesday, sentenced a Sector 19-based businessman to seven-year imprisonment in a rape case. It also awarded two-year imprisonment to his elderly parents for conniving with their son.

Amardeep Singh (44), alias Amarpreet, his father Rajinder Singh (73) and mother Rajinder Kaur (70) were booked on a complaint by a Sector 40 resident.

As per the prosecution, Amardeep had issued a matrimonial advertisement in 2006, declaring himself a divorcee wanting to get married again. He had said in the ad that he was willing to marry a divorced woman.

After going through the ad, the Sector 40-based woman approached Amardeep. They soon started seeing each other. The woman alleged in her complaint that Amardeep had raped her on the pretext of marrying her, but he did not solemnise the marriage.

The woman further alleged that she had even met Amardeep's parents, who had also assured her that their son would marry her. She said that after a few months, she got to know that Amardeep had still not divorced his wife and was cheating on her. Even his parents had concealed this fact from her, she alleged.

When the police failed to lodge her complaint, the woman approached the court. Amardeep, who was declared a proclaimed offender by the court, was arrested on January 4.
