The body of a 38- year- old man was found floating in the Sukhna Lake on Monday afternoon, the police said.
The victim, identified as Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Naya Gaon, was reported missing from his house for the past week. He is survived by his wife and two children.
The police suspect a case of suicide and attribute his death to depression as a result of unemployment.
After a policeman spotted his body floating close to the boating area, it was fished out and taken to the Government MultiSpecialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where he was declared brought dead.
Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Guriqbal Singh said the police were able to identify the victim with the help of the documents found on his possession. The police, however, did not recover a suicide note.
A case has been registered at the Sector-3 police station and inquest proceedings have been initiated.
SECURITY LAPSE LEAVES POLICE FLOUNDERING
The incident came despite tight security on the lake following the avian flu scare in the city. The lake was cordoned off for the public on December 18, after several geese died mysteriously. Police barricades run around the 3km radius of the lake.
Talking about the security lapse, Sector-3 police station SHO said, “There was proper security around the lake. The deceased may have managed to reach the lake from the forest area during the night.”
She also added that the deceased might have jumped into the lake around seven days ago.
