Man sent to 5-yr jail for attempting rape, molestation

The court of additional district and sessions judge Roopam Singh on Tuesday sent a 28-year-old man to 5-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) with `11,000 fine for attempting rape and molestation.

The victim is a married woman who is 35-year-old. She used to run a grocery store in Tibri Majra in Raipur Rani block in Panchkula.

On the night of February 9, as per allegations, when the victim was sleeping at her house, the convict namely Rakesh Kumar, also a resident of Tibri Majra, came to the victim's place and removed the quilt off the victim's body. Then, he allegedly molested and attempted to rape the victim.

As the woman raised an alarm, her mother-in-law got up. Kumar, who was just in his undergarments, fled from the spot. The next morning, he came and took away his clothes. The police were informed and a wallet and an ATM card of the convict were recovered from the victim's house.

During the trial, the victim supported her statement given to the police. The victim's mother-in-law also identified Kumar in the court.

The victim's husband is employed in the Army.

During the trial, the public prosecutor had also recommended action against the investigating officer sub-inspector Jagtaar Singh, Mouli police post, Panchkula, for shoddy probe.
