MANALI TRAGEDY: TIME-LINE
For the ill-fated group of studentsof a city-based engineering college merrily taking photos on the banks of Beas river in Himachal Pradesh, tragedy struck in a matter of couple of minutes as they were washed away in the swirling waters which suddenly rose several feet.chandigarh Updated: Jun 09, 2014 18:11 IST
JUNE 8 (SUNDAY)
6.00 PM: A group of engineering students from Hyderabad, who were travelling from Shimla to Manali, halted near Thalaut
6:05 PM: 38 of them climbed down 150 meters from the Chandigarh- Manali national highway to reach the bank of Beas river to take picture
6:15 PM: Officials at Larji hydro power project, located at a distance of 4 kilometers from the site of accident, released 50 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water and then 150 cusecs and 200 cusecs after intervals of 15 minutes, flooding Beas river.
6:45PM: Locals tried warning the students. Before they could realize, water level rose by 5-6 feet and 24 students including 6 girls and a tour operator were trapped
6:47PM: The students tried to make a chain to support each other, but were swept away by gushing waters. Angry Villagers blocked the national highway protesting against the callous authorities.
8:00PM: Additional district magistrate, Mandi, Pankaj Rai and rescue teams reach the spot, but the search operations could not be started due to lack of logistic support, searchlights and other equipment.
JUNE 9 (MONDAY)
5:00 AM: Search and rescue operations resumed. Team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the effort to search the missing students.
9:00 AM: Bodies of two students recovered
10:00-12.00: Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and union human resource development minister Smriti Irani reached the spot
12:15 PM: 3 more bodies fished out. Search operations continue in a 15-km stretch from the spot of incident and to Pandoh dam.
