After following the state government's orders, Mandi chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Deshraj Sharma on Friday started an inquiry into the incident, where a gynaecologist left a woman patient unattended at the operation table after giving her anaesthesia at Thunag primary health center (PHC) on Wednesday.

The government issued immediate suspension orders of gynaecologist Dr Kapil Malhotra and ordered for the inquiry into the incident same day.

However Dr Deshraj refused to give details of the statements of the people and staff and said that it was preliminary inquiry and details of the inquiry would be submitted to the state government by Monday.

Notable Malhotra performed five sterilisation operations in a “drunken” state at a family planning surgeries camp at Thunag on Wednesday and fell asleep, leaving the sixth patient, who was given anesthesia and was unconscious, on the operation table.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case under Section 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Gohar police station and blood sample of the doctor had been collected for examination. Police department has appointed ASI Jeet Singh as the investigating officer (IO) in the case.
