A cop who claimed he was manhandled by a SGPC member is now seeking redressal from the police top brass.
Giving details, subinspector Jaspal Singh said he was assigned at the VVIP gate at Punjab deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal's rally in Nangal on April 16 and was tasked with preventing unauthorised visitors entering the gate.
"At around 2:30 pm a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Amarjit Singh Chawla, arrived at the gate with four others with the intent of entering the venue. I let Chawla through but refused entry to the four men accompanying him as their names didn't figure in the list of the VVIPs invited. Infuriated, Chawla snatched the list from me and tore it, using abusive language.
He tried to push me away from the gate and was about to hit me when SP (detective) DS Mann arrived and pacified him," said Jaspal.
He said he felt humiliated, adding he was simply obeying his bosses' orders not to let any unauthorised visitors inside the rally venue.
After the rally ended Jaspal stated he promptly filed a complaint regarding the incident at the local police station, where he was asked to collect the complaint number from the Nangal police station the next day. "Despite visiting the police station during the next two days I didn't get any response and then forwarded the complaint to Rupnagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor," he added.
Denying the allegations, Chawla said he was one of the rally organisers and had advised Jaspal to let his companions enter the rally venue, to which the subinspector refused.
Meanwhile, Toor said he had asked Mann to submit a detailed report on the incident.
