People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) president Manpreet Singh Badal has finally admitted that he has taken primary membership of the Congress.

The PPP leader, who is contesting as a joint candidate of the PPP-Congress from Bathinda, has done this to enable him to contest the Lok Sabha polls on the Congress symbol of hand.

Earlier, sources in the All India Congress Committee (AICC) confirmed that Manpreet had been given the membership after following due procedure. Sources said he was given membership on the recommendation of the AICC.

Manpreet confirmed the fact to HT. “To take the membership is part of our election tactics as we had foreseen that they would not give us the symbol kite,” Manpreet told HT from Bathinda.

The development has put a question mark on the future of his fledgling PPP and Manpreet’s own political stance. The estranged cousin of deputy CM Sukhbir Badal had been vehemently denying taking the Congress membership, terming the move to contest on the Congress symbol as “tactical”.

As per the Congress constitution, anybody who wants to contest election to Parliament or a state legislature on a Congress ticket is required to be a member of the party.

Manpreet said the PPP would continue to exist and would contest the 2017 assembly election in alliance with the Congress.
