Slamming the government for ‘tardy’ procurement operations, People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Badal on Sunday called for immediate steps to end the harassment of farmers in mandis and adequate compensation for the crop damage due to the inclement weather.

In a statement here, the former Punjab finance minister demanded Rs 200 per quintal bonus for the farmers in the ongoing procurement season, highlighting the hiccups in the wheat procurement in mandis.

“Despite the good intentions of the state government, the fact is that the farmers continue to face unnecessary harassment in mandis and they have to wait for days to sell their produce, for no fault of theirs. The farmers can’t be penalised for natural calamities.

The state government must step in to compensate the farmers for the procurement done below the minimum support price,” he said.
