A delegation comprising traders and workers of marble market, Dhanas, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, Chandigarh, against the proposed displacement of the marble market from its current location.
The market is located in Dhanas village. A delegation of the Chandigarh unit of the party led by Kanwaljeet Singh of CPI (ML) Liberation demanded that the marble market which has been serving the construction needs of the city since the last ten years gives employment to nearly 1,500 workers and their families apart from more than 100 business men.
They also said that it is an integral part of the city and should not be displaced. Further, it also serves as a shelter to more than 200 workers who work by the day and sleep under the temporary tin sheds in the market itself and have no other place to go.
They claimed that the deputy commissioner assured the delegation that the administration will not demolish the market in haste as long as they do not erect permanent structures.
