Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday announced to waive 2% market fee, 3% rural development fund (RDF) cess and 3% Punjab infrastructure development fund (PIDF) cess on basmati rice production in Punjab.
The decision was announced after members of the Punjab Rice Millers and Export Association met the chief minister and apprised him of the difficulties faced by rice sheller owners, a spokesman said here.
Food and civil supplies minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon was present at the meeting, which was held at the CM's residence.
The relaxation would benefit the basmati rice shelling industry by Rs 200 crore, the spokesman said, adding that the decision was also taken to encourage diversification from paddy in the kharif season. The state has a target of bringing 10 lakh hectares under basmati rice plantation, the spokesman added.
