Finally after a month, mayor Subhash Chawla on Tuesday marked an inquiry into illegal mining at Dhanas after the officers failed to take action against the contractor and other officials concerned.
BJP councillors Davesh Moudgil and Arun Sood raised the issue in the House meeting and asked about the status of the case, but the officials failed to give any reply, following which the mayor marked an inquiry.
Municipal corporation (MC) executive engineer Arjit Singh, while clarifying the issue in the House, said there were no pits and when they enquired from the residents of the area they did not find anything illegal.
On March 20, the mayor and senior officials of the MC caught six men who were mining illegally for sand at Dhanas village. The men, who reportedly work for a private contractor hired by the MC, were even allowed by the officers on the spot to drive away a tractor-trolley they had filled with the illegally mined sand.
The miners were first spotted by locals, who informed about it to the mayor Subhash Chawla, who is also the councillor from the village. Chawla and other MC officials reached the spot and caught the contractor's men.
The incident has been criticised by the Opposition. BJP councillor Arun Sood described the incident as "strange".
"Despite catching the contractor's men red-handed, especially in the mayor's area, why the officers did not take any action against the contractor," he added.
