Putting an end to all speculations, the Congress on Thursday declared Subhash Chawla as candidate for the post of city mayor, while BJP declared Arun Sood as its candidate.
The elections to the post of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor are scheduled to be held on January 1, whereas the nominations for all three posts will be filed on December 28.
Announcing the candidates, BB Bahl, president of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee, said Rana Kashmiri Devi would be contesting for the post of senior deputy mayor and Satish Kainth, who is already deputy mayor, would again contest for the same post.
On other hand, the BJP has declared Rajesh Kumar Gupta for the post of senior deputy mayor and Malkiat Singh for the post of deputy mayor.
The BSP, which have two seats, has decided not to field any candidate for the mayor's post this time.
As many as 26 elected councillors and nine nominated councillors would be exercising their franchise to elect the top posts of the house. Nominated councillor Babu Lal has been appointed as presiding officer for the elections.
The candidate, who will get 19 votes, will bag the post. BJP rebel candidate Gurcharan Dass Kalaa, who won as an independent candidate, will play an important role in the elections.
Going by the claims of the Congress, there are 22 councillors, including one MP, in its kitty.
