After facing stiff opposition from traders over the introduction of hourly parking fee at Empire Store and Sahib Singh parking lots in Sector 17, the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) now plans to charge Rs 5 for four hours instead of earlier approved Rs 5 for two hours.
Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra, who took up the issue with the MC commissioner and mayor, submitted a fresh proposal in this regard. He said, “We have asked the authorities to charge Rs 5 for four hours and subsequently Rs 5 per hour for four-wheelers, including taxis, and Rs 2 per entry up to four hours for two-wheelers and subsequently Rs 2 per hour.”
In the finance and contract committee (F&CC) meeting held on May 21, it was decided that Rs 5 per entry would be charged for two hours and subsequently Rs 10 per hour, and Rs 2 per entry up to two hours subsequently Rs 4 per hour for two-wheelers.
In the meeting, both BJP and F&CC members opposed the decision. Following the new parking rates, traders were up in arms and met MC commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh and mayor Subhash Chawla and held several meetings with Chhabra.
Chawla said, “We have received the proposal from traders for charging Rs 5 for four hours and will bring up the matter for discussion in the next F&CC meeting.”
