In violation of model code of conduct, Panchkula Municipal Corporation (MC) kept flashing picture of Congress mayor Upinder Kaur Walia on its website.
The website had the picture of mayor on the home page but around 11 am on Wednesday it was removed. But it was still having the picture of mayor in the shuffling pictures on the home page. Later, it was removed as well.
There are clear instructions from Election Commission of India for removing pictures of political leaders from official websites. The model code of conduct has been invoked with announcement of elections on March 5.
"We have got the picture removed from the website today," said deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer SS Phulia.
"We have filed a complaint for use of picture of mayor Upinder Kaur Walia on website to chief electoral officer, Haryana," said Rakesh Aggarwal, general secretary, Resident Welfare association, sector 12, Panchkula.
"It shows our mayor is not law abiding. The photograph should have been removed much earlier," said Vishal Seth, district president of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
Surprisingly, the website of Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh is still using picture of mayor Harphool Chander Kalyan despite a complaint in this regard.
A city-based advocate and activist Ajay Jagga has lodged a complaint with the election observer appointed by the Election Commission (EC) accusing the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) of violating the model code of conduct.
It is important to mention here that Haryana government had removed the pictures of chief minister (CM) and ministers from the websites and even the calendars in the government officers are covered to hide the picture of CM.
