Continuing with its drive to make the city stray cattle-free, Chandigarh municipal corporation will be shifting 88 more stray cattle to a gaushala at Balachaur in Punjab, on Wednesday. The stray cattle will be shifted in 11 trucks from a cow shed in Industrial Area in Phase 1. At present all three cow sheds in city have 1,500 stray cattle in them.

In similar drives, Chandigarh MC had shifted around 1,000 stray cows to Najafgarh and Barsana.

In August this year, civic body shifted 195 head of cattle, including 80 bulls, from the city to Shri Maan Madir Seva Sansthan Barsana in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh; but, near Helimandi village of Pataudi near Gurgaon, angry villagers set as many as 16 trucks, which were part of a convoy of 25 trucks, on fire.

The locals mistook people transporting these strays as cattle smugglers, and went on a rampage after off-loading the animals.

City mayor Subhash Chawla said that the shifting of stray cows would start from Wednesday. Proper arrangements have made to shift the cattle in 11 trucks with the MC staff.

The shifting of stray cattle various cow sheds was decided in a finance and contract committee meeting of MC held recently. The decision was taken after three people died in city after stray-cattle related accidents, Chawla said.

Meanwhile, BJP councillor Arun Sood said, "MC is shifting stray cows without checking the credentials of the cow shed owners. The officers have assured that they had visited the cowsheds in 2006 and they were satisfied with the arrangements there. In future if anything is found wrong, MC Officers will be responsible".
