It was unfortunate that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had issued a notice to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) for its proposal to construct a memorial in memory of the Sikhs killed in the 1984 riots, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal said on Saturday.
Talking to reporters here, Badal said there was no harm in constructing the memorial to pay homage to those innocent people who were killed by mobs after being incited by the Congress leaders following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards in reprisal for Operation Blue Star.
Squarely blaming the Congress for the "brutal murder of innocent Sikhs," he said the community would never forgive the Congress for this grave sin.
He said the proposed eastern freight corridor between Amritsar and Kolkata, granted clearance by the Centre yesterday, was the result of the concerted efforts made by the SAD-BJP alliance government in last many years.
The CM added that the project would accelerate the tempo of ongoing overall development of the state and give a major fillip to its industrial development.
"Besides writing letters, I had personally taken up this matter with the Union government a number of times", Badal added.
The Shiromani Akali Dal veteran leader reiterated his demand for a special economic package for the state.
