Medical seats: Baba Farid varsity to start counselling today

With Adesh University, Bathinda, barred from holding its separate admission counselling for MBBS and BDS courses, the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, is set to hold counselling for all seats in the state from Saturday.
Government and private medical colleges in Punjab have around 800 MBBS seats, excluding the 300 seats of Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot, and the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences, Jalandhar, where the Medical Council of India's inspection report is awaited. Various medical colleges in the state have also applied for around 180 additional MBBS seats from the upcoming session. If all goes well, the total number of MBBS seats in Punjab could cross 1,250. There are 1,150 BDS seats in the state.

Earlier, acting on the Hindustan Times report ('At Rs 40 lakh per MBBS seat, Adesh varsity charges 20-fold', June 11), the government had stopped Adesh University from holding separate counselling. The latter was scheduled to hold its counselling on June 17, but now BFUHS would do it for Adesh University's seats as well. The university has 150 MBBS and 100 BDS seats.

Adesh University had challenged the state government's order in the Punjab and Haryana high court and sought a stay on the decision.

The university had argued that being an unaided institute, it was entitled to hold its own admission counselling, but the court refused to stay the order.

However, parents of medical aspirants have been demanding all along that there should be centralised counselling for admission to all MBBS and BDS seats in the state.
