Citing example of Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has said that Balwant Singh Rajoana should be granted clemency on "humanitarian grounds".

"It has been done in case of Nalni also. I do not think you can take away rights from the people who have different thinking, who are asking for clemency for a particular person," Mehbooba said on Monday.

"This (clemency) is nothing new in our country - this can be done on humanitarian grounds - various states in various cases have done it," Mehbooba told reporters in Jammu.

Nalini was among the four convicts awarded death sentence in the former Prime Minister's assassination case but it was commuted to life.

"On humanitarian grounds, (UPA chairperson) Sonia Gandhi intervened - got the death sentence commuted to life imprisonment in case of Nalini on humanitarian grounds".

"There are many ways to deal with terror - one of them is to address the issue rather than use of force - even fighting terrorism, you still have to think about human angle," she said.
